[Saba Sports News] Al Nassr officially announced that 60-year-old Australian tactician Ange Postecoglou, who previously managed Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest, has been appointed the club’s new head coach on a two-year contract.
This appointment marks Postecoglou’s return to Asian football, a region he knows well, after a brief spell coaching in top European leagues. Postecoglou was at the helm of the Australian national team and led them to lift the 2015 AFC Asian Cup trophy. In 2019, he steered Yokohama F·Marinos to claim the J1 League title. Last season, he took charge of Nottingham Forest midway through the campaign but was dismissed after just eight games with a dismal record of two draws and six defeats. Postecoglou’s move to Al Nassr came as a major surprise, with virtually no transfer rumours linking him to the club beforehand. Prior to this, Roberto Martínez, the current head coach of Portugal, had long been tipped as Al Nassr’s preferred candidate for the managerial vacancy.
Cristiano Ronaldo is Al Nassr’s marquee star, and the striker shares an excellent working relationship with Martínez from their time together with Portugal, making a reunion at club level seem like a natural fit. Postecoglou is renowned for his bold, attacking style of play that demands immense fitness from every player, leaving fans curious to see how he will deploy Ronaldo within his setup.
In my view, Postecoglou’s appointment as Al Nassr boss to manage Cristiano Ronaldo is a high-risk, high-reward tactical experiment. There is an inherent conflict between his aggressive high-pressing system and the physical limits of the 41-year-old superstar. The success or failure of this partnership hinges on whether Postecoglou can redefine Ronaldo’s role as a clinical finisher rather than a hard-running workhorse.
