With the help of Rinku Singh, Rohit Sharma became the
first man to five T20I hundreds and led India from 22 for 4 to 212 for 4, their
biggest partnership in T20I history. It was insufficient. After returning to
the field to smash two sixes in the opening Super Over, he appeared to be
retiring in order to acquire a better runner at the non-striker’s end. Not
enough yet. He was required to return and hit a six in the second Super Over,
and he was permitted to do so.
Even though they had the highest score when chasing,
had impressive batting from Gulbadin Naib and Mohammad Nabi, and had gotten off
to a great start with the ball in regulation time, the courageous Afghans ran
out of gas this time and struck two short-of-a-length legbreaks straight to
long-off to cap off a dramatic evening still without an international victory
against India.
They can’t tell you that the bilateral series was
really a dead rubber. Things occurred that are uncommon to witness. On the
final delivery of the first Super Over, Nabi and Rahmanullah Gurbaz ran
overthrows off the body, which infuriated Virat Kohli, who clapped in Nabi’s
face.
After a few minutes, when two balls remained to be
hit, Rohit, the non-striker, left to let Rinku take over as the running back.
However, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s low blow only reached the wicketkeeper, and an
additional Super Over was required for the second tie. As per point 22 of
Appendix F of the playing conditions, Rohit was eligible to bat again after
just one ball. However, this should have been permitted only in cases where
Rohit had retired due to an injury, illness, or “any other unavoidable cause”
beforehand.
India was leading the batting currently. Thus, with
the new ball in regular time, Rohit scorched Fareed Ahmad, India’s torturer,
for a six and a four one ball later. If Rohit managed to escape with one there,
he would likely believe he was entitled to one given that an earlier, obviously
high full toss was not ruled a no-ball. Or when he smacked the leather off a
ball on a leg look and the umpire called leg byes, keeping him waiting on 0
after his two ducks earlier. But as the match progressed, Rohit exhausted
himself attempting to steal a bye, and Fareed managed to get Rinku out on
review.
India switched to Bishnoi’s legspin after seeing two
right-hand batters removed, and he avoided making the same error of bowling too
quickly as before. He played it long and slow, and despite Nabi and Gurbaz’s
best efforts, they were unable to apply enough force to strike sixes.
