[Saba Sports News] Mohammad Hafeez finds himself in a state of uncertainty as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have delayed its decision on his long-term contract. Hafeez, currently serving as Pakistan’s team director and interim coach, faces a doubtful future amidst discussions surrounding his contract extension.
Hafeez’s appointment as team director, initially set for one month by the former chairman of the interim committee overseeing PCB affairs, came with the prospect of extension to a three-year term. However, despite assurances from the then-chairman Zaka Ashraf, the contract extension has hit a roadblock. The situation further complicated when the former chairman resigned, leaving Hafeez in limbo.
Amidst the turmoil, Hafeez, aged 43, engaged in discussions recently with the acting chairman of the board Shah Khawar and the chief operating officer Salman Naseer in Lahore. The meeting delved into Pakistan’s recent cricket performances, particularly the disappointing outcomes in Australia and New Zealand, where Pakistan suffered crushing defeats under Hafeez’s tenure as the head coach.
Sources reveal that Khawar and Naseer conveyed to Hafeez that his contract status was under review by the ministry, which expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s recent performances. The ministry’s stance further complicates Hafeez’s prospects, leaving the final decision on his contract to the incoming chairman of the PCB.
In the midst of negotiations, Hafeez emphasized the need for clearance of his dues from the recent tours.
“Hafeez also reminded Naseer that his dues from the tour should be cleared no matter what the ministry or incoming Chairman decides,” a source said as quoted.
The source also mentioned that despite expressing interest in continuing as the director of the team, Hafeez received lukewarm responses, casting doubts on his future role within the PCB.
“Hafeez showed interest in continuing as Director of the team but the response he got was not very encouraging,” the source added.
