On a Super Sunday for South Africa, Marco Jansen
scored a career-best 47 off just 23 balls and claimed his maiden ODI
five-wicket haul. Minutes after the Springboks won their second Rugby World
Cup, they finished off a comeback victory in the ODI series against Australia
to successfully kick off the summer season.
South Africa battled back to win the next three One
Day Internationals and carry a series victory to the World Cup after opening
the series with two losses and behind 2-0 after the first game. All of their
triumphs were founded on the batting order’s good showings, which gave the
attack enough runs to defend.
When Jansen arrived at the crease following Aiden
Markram and David Miller’s 109-run fifth-wicket stand, which set the stage for
South Africa to finish strongly, Jansen’s perfect day officially began. Despite
what their half-centuries indicate, Markram and Miller had trouble getting the
fluency going. However, Jansen immediately demonstrated his determination when
he flicked Tim David off his pads for four. Before he mishit Cameron Green to
long-on, he appeared the most at ease of the South African hitters at the
crease, scoring 18 runs off the first 13 balls he faced. David botched a grab
that should have been easy, and Jansen took advantage of his let off.
Jansen terminated toe. Phehlukwayo took over after
Green to Abbott failed to get a maiden half-century in the format. He hit
Michael Neser for back-to-back heavy hits on the leg side and Abbott over
long-off for six runs before finishing with four through the covers. In the
final two overs, South Africa scored 34 runs, pushing their total over 300.
Prior to the introduction of Jansen, Australia got off
to a strong start in the chase and had 34 after three overs. David Warner was
squeezed for space as he attempted to cut away his second ball, which was
behind of a length on the fifth stump and moved back into Warner. Markram, who
was playing point, caught the ball well and low to give Jansen his first. He
struck one in short after four balls, which put Josh Inglis in a pickle. The
batter was able to get a chop back onto his stumps despite staying back for the
pull.
When it appeared that no other bowler would
participate, Keshav Maharaj dismissed Green by bowling David and taking a good
return catch off his own bowling. Australia has struggled with batting
collapses throughout this series, and this time they lost 8 for 69 and only had
three partnerships worth more than 12 runs.
