The YONEX German Open 2025 (Super 300) will be held in Mulheim, Germany, from February 25 to March 2, with a total prize pool of up to $240,000. Compared to previous years, this year’s Germany Open has encountered a lack of excitement due to schedule adjustments and other factors. Apart from the men’s singles, which still features top ten players, the other events lack star players.
Looking at the men’s singles draw, the situation has changed significantly due to several withdrawals, including Hong Kong players Angus Ng Ka Long and Lee Cheuk Yiu, as well as Indian player Prannoy H. S. The top seed, Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen, will face Japan’s Riku Hatano in the first round. If he advances smoothly, he may meet Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan, the 2023 World Junior Champion, in the second round, and it is quite likely he will encounter compatriot Rasmus Gemke in the quarter-finals. On the other hand, the second seed, Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew, will face a qualifier in the first round and then meet the winner of the match between Taipei’s Su Li Yang and Malaysia’s Cheam June Wei in the second round. He may also face compatriot Jason Teh Jia Heng in the quarter-finals.
For young players, this tournament represents both a challenge and an opportunity. With many strong competitors withdrawing, they have more chances to showcase their best abilities. Among all the participants, Viktor Axelsen, a Danish star and two-time Olympic champion, is undoubtedly the favorite to win. As a top player in men’s singles today, Axelsen has formidable strength, comprehensive and stable skills, as well as rich experience in major competitions and strong mental resilience. In the recent India Open, Axelsen fought his way to the final and ultimately defeated Lee Cheuk Yiu 2-0 to claim the championship, showcasing his impressive form.
It is worth mentioning that the second seed, Loh Kean Yew, also possesses excellent skills and competitive form, making him a significant obstacle for Axelsen on his path to victory. If Loh can advance to the final, he is likely to face Axelsen. To stand a chance against the powerful Axelsen, Loh needs to release any pressure, give it his all, and maximize his skill strengths while effectively planning tactics and counter-defenses, potentially creating a miracle in this peak showdown. Meanwhile, we hope all players can perform at their best during the competition, bringing exciting matches to badminton fans, and we look forward to seeing young players shine on the court.
