Augsburg has been playing in the Bundesliga since the 2011-12 season. Although their strength is average, they have always managed to avoid relegation. This season, the team started with two wins, one draw, and five losses, showing no improvement. In the midweek DFB Cup, Augsburg, playing at home, was unexpectedly eliminated by the 2. Bundesliga team VfL Bochum. In the last league match, also at home, Augsburg suffered a heavy 0-6 defeat to RB Leipzig. Looking at the match progression, Augsburg created a total of 30 shooting opportunities across the last two games but failed to convert them into a single goal, indicating low offensive efficiency and players not being in their best form. After eight league rounds, Augsburg has conceded 20 goals, making them the worst defensive team in the Bundesliga. Their goalkeeper, Finn Dahmen, averages only three saves per game, ranking ninth among all Bundesliga goalkeepers. So far this season, Augsburg has yet to keep a clean sheet. Taking the last league game as an example, RB Leipzig converted eight shots on target into six goals; two of those conceded goals were due to fatal mistakes by Finn Dahmen. After the match, Finn Dahmen received the lowest rating, clearly showing that his confidence has been affected by the consecutive goals conceded.
Although affected by competing in multiple competitions, Borussia Dortmund has only lost once so far this season, and that defeat was against the Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich. Coach Niko Kovac‘s transformation of the team is beginning to show results. From recent matches, Kovac has changed Dortmund’s traditional 4-2-3-1 formation to a 3-4-2-1 system with three central defenders. This compresses the defensive line to enhance control in midfield and increases the speed of transition between attack and defense. Through high-intensity running and a high-pressing tactic, the team’s defensive quality has improved. Currently, Dortmund has conceded only six goals in the league, the second fewest in the Bundesliga, just behind the league leaders Bayern Munich’s four goals. Among the attacking players, Guinean international Serhou Guirassy has been performing consistently, contributing four goals and one assist in the league. The team’s most valuable player, Karim Adeyemi, has also had standout performances, contributing two goals and one assist in the league. Additionally, vice-captain Julian Brandt has also shown excellent form recently. In the midweek DFB Cup match, Brandt, who returned to the starting lineup, scored a crucial goal; added by his wonderful goal against Bayern Munich previously, Brandt has become a secret weapon from the bench.
There is a significant gap in form between the two teams, with Borussia Dortmund’s overall performance this season being superior to Augsburg’s. Considering Augsburg’s numerous defensive vulnerabilities, Dortmund’s attackers certainly won’t miss the scoring opportunities. For this matchup, Borussia Dortmund is expected to win easily.
