This year marks Como 1907’s second season in Serie A. After being acquired by the Indonesian investment group Djarum Group, the team appointed former Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas as head coach, infusing “Spanish DNA” into the squad. Statistics from the first two rounds of the league show that Como boasts an average possession rate of 64%, ranking first in the league; an average of 15.5 tackles per game, also top in the league; and an average of 17 fouls per game, again leading the league. Clearly, Como has perfectly replicated Barcelona’s possession-based tactics, pressing immediately upon losing the ball and disrupting the opponent’s rhythm even at the cost of fouls. The only slight drawback is that, due to an investment of over €100 million in the summer transfer window to sign 12 players, the team is still in a run-in phase. In the first two league matches, they took a total of 32 shots but converted only two into goals, indicating somewhat low offensive efficiency. However, after additional training during the international break, Como’s attacking efficiency is expected to improve.
Genoa was the runner-up in the 2022-23 Serie B season. After promotion, due to reckless signings and poor management, the team once accumulated over €100 million in debt. With the coordination of the Italian Football Association, Genoa formulated a debt restructuring plan, which imposed restrictions on transfer spending in subsequent windows, requiring that transfer expenditures must be lower than transfer income. In this summer’s transfer window, Genoa generated a profit of €52 million from player sales, making them the Serie A team with the highest net transfer profit. However, their spending on new signings was €0, lower than that of the three promoted teams, and they only brought in Romanian international Nicolae Stanciu on a free transfer, making them the team with the fewest signings in Serie A. While other teams engaged in an arms race, Genoa moved against the tide, significantly reducing their overall strength and becoming one of the favorites for relegation this season. After two league matches, Genoa has yet to score a goal, with a total of 15 shots and only three on target.
In terms of the total market value of the first-team squads, Como is valued at €256 million, while Genoa is valued at €138 million, indicating a clear gap in strength between the two sides. Como has always been strong at securing points at home, with a record of five wins, two draws, and one loss in their last eight league home matches. Their only defeat came against last season’s runners-up, Inter. Facing the struggling Genoa at home, Como is expected to seize the opportunity to claim all three points.
