Borussia Dortmund suffered a 0-2 defeat to VfL Bochum in last weekend’s league match, marking their second consecutive loss in the league. However, in their last five matches, Dortmund has achieved three wins and two losses, showing overall decent performance. Notably, in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Playoff round, Dortmund convincingly beat Sporting CP 3-0 away, taking the lead. Since Niko Kovac took over, there are still many issues that Dortmund needs to address. Tactically, Kovac is trying to build gradually through a solid defense, using the width of the pitch to stretch the opponent’s defense and create attacking spaces. The success of this tactic heavily relies on the players’ synergy and individual skill execution. Currently, there is still friction between Kovac’s tactical philosophy and the established playing style of some veterans, making this adjustment period somewhat painful.
Sporting CP drew 2-2 at home against Arouca in last weekend’s league match, and the team has only managed one win, three draws, and one loss in their last five matches, showing a very low form. Under Rui Borges’ leadership, Sporting CP’s performance initially improved, but recently, the team’s form has started to decline again. Borges’ tactical style is pragmatic, combining quick counterattacks with defensive play to create scoring opportunities. However, this simple and direct attacking approach appears somewhat one-dimensional and can be easily countered by stronger opponents. Additionally, Borges lacks experience in the Champions League, which is a significant weakness for him as a coach. Furthermore, Sporting CP’s away performance has significantly lagged behind their home form, with a dismal record of just one win, three draws, and three losses in their last seven away matches.
Although Dortmund’s recent form has fluctuated, their overall strength and performance are clearly superior to those of Sporting CP. Additionally, Kovac’s rich experience in the Champions League is something that Borges lacks. With Dortmund also enjoying the advantage of playing at home, it is reasonable to expect that Dortmund can secure another victory.
