Last season’s Bundesliga runners-up, Bayer Leverkusen, experienced a turbulent summer. Head coach Xabi Alonso left to manage Real Madrid, while key players such as Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Granit Xhaka, and Jonathan Tah also departed. To assist in rebuilding the team, the club appointed former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. Unfortunately, Ten Hag’s performance was highly disappointing, and after just two league matches, Leverkusen initiated a coaching change, becoming the first Bundesliga team to do so this season. On September 8, Leverkusen finally confirmed their new manager: Kasper Hjulmand, former head coach of the Danish national team. In 2021, Hjulmand led Denmark to the semifinals of the European Championship, showcasing extensive experience in major tournaments. Previously, he managed Mainz in the Bundesliga but left after just six months due to poor results. Now, as he returns to the Bundesliga for his home debut, the biggest question is whether Hjulmand can adapt to the league’s pace.
Eintracht Frankfurt, last season’s third-place finisher, started the new season with two consecutive wins, scoring a total of seven goals. Newly signed winger Ritsu Doan has already contributed two goals and one assist, seamlessly integrating into the team’s tactics. Additionally, the team is experiencing a youth revolution: 21-year-old attacking midfielder Can Uzun has recorded two goals and two assists, 20-year-old winger Jean-Matteo Bahoya has notched two goals and one assist, 21-year-old midfielder Hugo Larsson has provided two assists, and 22-year-old attacking midfielder Fares Chaibi has contributed one assist. Clearly, the team has not been affected by the departures of top scorer Hugo Ekitike and key center-back Tuta, successfully completing a transition between old and new players. Beyond these young talents, experienced veterans like Michy Batshuayi and Mario Gotze provide stability. Barring widespread injuries, Eintracht Frankfurt could challenge Bayern Munich’s dominance in the league this season.
Bayer Leverkusen has just undergone a coaching change, and the team is still in a run-in period, making it difficult to perform at their best in a short time. In contrast, Eintracht Frankfurt has started the season with two consecutive wins and is on an upward trajectory. All seven of their goals were assisted, highlighting the team’s strong coordination. In this matchup, Eintracht Frankfurt is unlikely to miss the opportunity to secure points away from home.
