Premier League: Ipswich Town vs Southampton

Ipswich Town is a newly promoted team in the Premier League this season. With a record of three wins, seven draws, and 13 losses, they currently sit in 19th place in the league, showing little competitive strength. In the last league match against league leaders Liverpool, the team deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation. Clearly, head coach Kieran McKenna aimed to alleviate defensive pressure by strengthening the midfield defense. Unfortunately, faced with Liverpool’s high pressing, the players’ low passing success rate was exposed, leading to several mistakes around midfield, and they managed only three shot attempts throughout the match. For this upcoming match, Ipswich is expected to revert to their original 5-4-1 formation, as it can at least create some shooting opportunities through efficient counterattacks. Ipswich’s issues lie in their attack, having scored only 21 goals, averaging less than one goal per game. To address their lack of attacking power, the team signed Jaden Philogene, a former main winger for the England U21 national team, from Aston Villa for a record transfer fee of €23.7 million during the winter transfer window. It is believed he will use his speed and dribbling ability to create scoring opportunities for the team.
Southampton is also a newly promoted team in the Premier League, but their overall performance has been even worse than Ipswich’s. They currently have only six points, 11 points away from the relegation zone, and are the team with the fewest goals scored and the most goals conceded in the league. Due to their poor results, Southampton changed coaches at the end of December last year, hiring former Roma coach Ivan Juric. However, Juric has failed to bring about any substantial changes; in his seven league matches in charge, he has managed to earn only one point, with the only match he didn’t lose being a 0-0 draw where he was unable to coach from the sidelines due to paperwork issues. Even more disheartening is that Southampton conceded a total of 17 goals in those seven matches, with defensive weaknesses all over the place. In terms of tactical style, Juric emphasizes high pressing, using active running and aggressive confrontation to pressure opponents and create shooting opportunities. The problem is, Southampton’s previous tactics did not align with this approach, as they focused on ball possession and backfield organization. Changing coaches midway through the season indicates that the club’s management was dissatisfied with the initial tactical system; however, their rationale for the coaching change is somewhat perplexing. The former coach emphasized possession-based play, while Juric’s approach is to implement high pressing. Such a sudden shift in tactical style can be difficult for even a powerhouse like Arsenal to adapt to.
Ipswich is taking targeted measures to strengthen their attacking line during the winter transfer window, while Southampton appears to be in a state of panic, with their overall strength declining rather than improving after the coaching change. Clearly, Ipswich’s tactical system is more refined, and it is believed they can leverage their home advantage to secure all three points.
