Euro U21 2025, commonly known as the U21 European Championship, has been held since 1978, taking place every two years. Italy’s U21 team is a regular participant, having reached the runner-up position in 2013. However, the team performed poorly in the previous tournament and was eliminated in the group stage. In this edition of the tournament, Italy’s U21 team is placed in the same group as the host Slovakia U21 team and the runners-up from the last event, Spain U21, with Romania U21 being considered by fans to be the weakest opponent in the group. From the current roster, the Italian Football Federation has sent its strongest lineup. In defense, there is strong support from Verona’s dual stars Daniele Ghilardi and Diego Coppola. The former demonstrated impressive performance in Serie A with 102 clearances, 44 tackles, and 30 interceptions. The latter has scored two goals, along with 194 clearances, 72 interceptions, and 66 tackles, catching the attention of Juventus and being referred to by media as the successor to Leonardo Bonucci. In midfield, Cesare Casadei, the top scorer of the U20 World Cup, leads the way; Giovanni Fabbiano, playing for Bologna, is expected to play a key role as an unpredictable player, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 30 Serie A matches. Up front, the most notable player is Wilfried Gnonto of Leeds United, who contributed to their victory in the English Championship, scoring nine goals, providing six assists, and making 46 key passes, with his market value already rising to €22 million, the highest in the team.
Romania U21’s best performance in the Euro U21 Championship was reaching the semi-finals in 2019. However, due to the growth of key players like Dennis Man, Romania has experienced a talent gap in recent tournaments, failing to advance beyond the group stage in the last two events. Looking at the current roster, the most well-known and promising player is Matteo Dutu, the central defender of AC Milan’s youth team. Last summer, Dutu joined AC Milan from Lazio on a free transfer, and he has spent much of this season competing with the reserve team, helping them reach the final of the Italian Youth Cup and the championship phase of the reserve league. Given that Dutu is only 19 years old and the youngest player on the Romania squad, there were doubts about him being left out. However, in a friendly match against Georgia U21, Dutu’s excellent performance led to a clean sheet, eventually convincing the coach and securing his spot. Outside of Dutu, other players on Romania U21 lack significant fame and do not possess the ability to play in Europe’s top five leagues. Prior to the match, Romania U21 reportedly had internal strife over the inclusion of Alexandru Rosca, goalkeeper of Bucharest Dinamo, in the roster, sparking strong discontent from player agents. These agents publicly criticized coach Daniel Pancu and his coaching staff on social media, accusing the selection process of lacking transparency and implying favoritism. Despite this, Pancu remained unaffected by negative comments and focused his pre-match training on countering Italy’s fast counter-attack strategy.
There is a certain disparity in strength between the two teams. Italy U21 has an advantage in controlling the pace of the game and managing pressure. The current Romania U21 has lost its underdog status. It is believed that Italy U21 can win comfortably.
