After being relegated from the Bundesliga in the 2018-19 season, Hannover 96 has been playing in the 2. Bundesliga. Last season, they finished ninth, seven points away from the promotion playoff. In preparation for their 130th anniversary next year, the club has increased its investment by hiring German coach Christian Titz, who led Magdeburg to fifth place in the 2. Bundesliga last season. Under Titz’s leadership, the team has signed as many as 16 new players, including Sierra Leone international Mustapha Bundu, who scored 10 goals and provided six assists in the Championship League last season, and Finnish international Benjamin Kallman, who scored 18 goals and provided seven assists in the Polish First Division last season. However, with such a large number of new signings, several key players have left, including goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler, who was named the best goalkeeper in the 2. Bundesliga and played every game last season; striker Nicolo Tresoldi, who started 25 games and scored seven goals with one assist; center-back Marcel Halstenberg, who made 28 starts; full-back Sei Muroya, who made 25 starts; defensive midfielder Fabian Kunze, who started 25 games; center-back Phil Neumann, who made 33 starts; defender Jannik Dehm, who played 21 times; and defensive midfielder Max Christiansen, who played 16 times. To put it simply, Hannover 96 has essentially replaced half of its starting eleven. The challenge for Titz is whether the team can be quickly integrated and ready for the upcoming season.
In the 1997–98 season, Kaiserslautern famously won the Bundesliga title as a promoted team. However, the club struggled afterward due to financial difficulties and declining youth development. After years of rebuilding, the team finally returned to the 2. Bundesliga via the promotion play-offs in the 2021–22 season. Last season, they finished seventh, just five points away from the promotion playoff. So far, Kaiserslautern’s transfer dealings have been highly successful. They lost key players like striker Ragnar Ache, who scored 18 goals and provided one assist last season, and defensive midfielder Filip Kaloc, who made 26 appearances. However, the club has also brought in several strong additions, including central midfielder Semih Sahin from Erzgebirge Aue (the 2022–23 3. Liga runners-up), backup striker Ivan Prtajin from Union Berlin, forward Mahir Emreli from Nuremberg (who scored 10 goals and provided one assist in the 2. Bundesliga last season), defensive midfielder Fabian Kunze from their opponents Hannover 96, South Korean defender Ji-soo Kim from Brentford in the Premier League, and center-back Simon Asta from their promotion rivals FC Ingolstadt 04. Overall, Kaiserslautern has significantly improved its strength and has become one of the top contenders for promotion.
In April this year, with four matches remaining in the 2. Bundesliga season, Kaiserslautern invited Torsten Lieberknecht, a “German expert” who previously led Darmstadt from the 2. Bundesliga to the Bundesliga, to take charge. For Lieberknecht, this means he has a full pre-season cycle to build his squad according to his own tactical vision. In contrast, Hannover 96 only confirmed their new coach in mid-June, and their pre-season preparations have not gone smoothly. Traditionally, Hannover 96 has trained in Saalfelden, Austria, but this year, they had to move to a local high school after being unexpectedly “invaded” by Al-Nassr. With too many new signings, some key players have expressed dissatisfaction. In early July, a player conflict occurred, and the coach Titz had to mediate to resolve it. From the perspective of preparation, Kaiserslautern has already taken an early lead. Facing a poorly integrated Hannover 96, Kaiserslautern will surely not miss the chance to take points on the road.
