The Yonex
Sunrise India Open 2024 is scheduled to take place in New Delhi from January
16th to 21st. This tournament is categorized as a Super750 event following the
Malaysian Open Super 1000 competition, and it offers a prize money pool of up
to US$850,000. According to the draw results, Lee Zii Jia from Malaysia,
currently ranked 11th in the world, is set to face Canada’s Brian Yang, ranked
26th in the world, in the first round of the tournament.
In the
recently concluded Malaysian Open, local player Lee Zii Jia faced an early exit
as he was defeated 1-2 by Chinese teenager Lu Guang Zu in the first round.
Lee’s performance in that match highlighted his lack of mental stability. When
he is in good form, he has proven his ability to defeat top players like Viktor
Axelsen in the All-England. However, if he is not in form, he can struggle at
the net and easily lose points. Lee’s strengths lie in his impeccable offensive
skills, with a versatile forehand and the ability to vary his shots from the
baseline. However, his performance at the net is often inconsistent, with
experienced opponents able to exploit his lack of stability and exploit his
center of gravity. Additionally, his defense in the overhead area and on both
sides of the court still requires improvement. One of his major shortcomings is
his tendency to make unforced errors. If he can enhance his stability and
skills at the net, he has the potential to achieve better results in his
matches.
Brian
Yang is indeed a Chinese-Canadian teenager born in 2001. He has represented
Canada in several Pan American Youth Championships and achieved notable
success. In 2017, he won the men’s singles championship at the Pan American
Youth Championships. Yang also secured victories in adult competitions, such as
the 2017 Suriname Badminton International, the 2021 Peru Badminton
International, and the 2021 Denmark Badminton Masters. These achievements
highlight his potential and the skills he possesses. In the previous Malaysian
Open, Yang demonstrated his ability by defeating Wang Tzu Wei from Chinese Taipei
with a 2-1 score in the first round. However, he faced a loss in the second
round against Japanese player Kodai Naraoka, with a score of 1-2. Despite the
loss, Yang Can’s performance shows that he is a competitive player who should
not be underestimated.
Based on
the overall record between Lee Zii Jia and Brian Yang, it appears that Lee has
a significant advantage. In previous encounters at the All England Open, Thomas
Cup, and World Championship, Lee has emerged victorious with all 2-0 scoreline
against Yang. While Lee experienced a first-round defeat at the Malaysian Open,
his overall skill and ability remain noteworthy. It is crucial for him to focus
on adjusting his mentality and performing at his usual level. With his strong
capabilities, it is likely that he can defeat Yang and regain his confidence.
