This summer, Manchester City underwent a rebuilding phase, with key players including legendary captain Kevin De Bruyne, midfield mainstay Ilkay Gundogan, first-choice goalkeeper Ederson, and central defender Manuel Akanji all departing. Due to this restructuring, City’s early-season form was inconsistent, managing only three points from their first three league matches. However, the team finally found their rhythm in the latest league match, securing a 3-0 victory at home against local rivals Manchester United. The match saw goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma make his debut and keep a clean sheet, Erling Haaland score a brace, and Jeremy Doku provide two assists. After enduring two consecutive defeats, Manchester City showed significant improvement in both style and momentum. Notably, Haaland has now scored 50 goals in 50 Premier League home appearances, making him the second-fastest player to reach 50 home goals in Premier League history, behind only Alan Shearer, who achieved the feat in 47 home games. Following the match, manager Josep Guardiola stated that Haaland is currently even stronger than during their treble-winning season.
Napoli, last season’s Serie A champions, started this season with three consecutive wins, demonstrating excellent form. During the summer transfer window, Napoli focused on strengthening their attack by signing PSV Eindhoven forward Noa Lang, who recorded 11 goals and 10 assists in the Eredivisie last season, Udinese center-forward Lorenzo Lucca, who contributed 12 goals and one assist in Serie A, Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund, and Manchester City’s midfield maestro Kevin De Bruyne. On paper, Napoli’s attacking lineup is arguably the best in Serie A. However, in the first three league matches, neither Lorenzo Lucca nor Noa Lang has found the net, and Hpjlund has only managed one goal. Clearly, the new attacking trio has yet to develop chemistry and is underperforming relative to expectations. Additionally, manager Antonio Conte could be a weak link for Napoli in the Champions League. Throughout his coaching career, Conte has often been eliminated in the group stages of the Champions League, with his best result being a quarter-final finish. He has never won any of Europe’s three major cup competitions.
In terms of squad depth, Manchester City can field a starting lineup valued at over €700 million, with three players worth over €100 million – Haaland, Phil Foden, and Rodri—forming a formidable attacking trio. In contrast, Napoli’s starting lineup is valued at around €250 million, with their most valuable player being central defender Alessandro Buongiorno, priced at €50 million. Comparing the peak potential of both teams, the likely outcome of this match is clear: Manchester City will dominate offensively, while Napoli will focus on defense. Given Manchester City’s attackers’ superior efficiency in converting chances, the home side is expected to secure a comfortable victory.
