Southgate said: “We don’t win by four or seven goals every game. It was a very good test and the atmosphere was great. We were forced to make quite a few changes in the last game. Sometimes in the attacking game, our team as a whole is not good enough. We know teamwork is something we’ve been working on all week, so it’s not like we approach the game differently.

“I think what I liked was the control we had when the game went into a tense phase. I think until the last third of the game we were composed and I think when we scored we had more than 70 per cent of possession, but that was the first time we tried to score.”
