[Saba Sports News] Earlier media reports suggested that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) might be postponed to 2028, due to concerns over infrastructure, stadium construction, and tournament organization capabilities among the three co-host countries, as raised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). However, CAF has recently made a clear statement confirming that the tournament will proceed as planned.
This edition of AFCON carries extraordinary significance. It coincides with the 70th anniversary of the tournament’s founding, marks the first time three countries will co-host the event, and represents the return of the competition to East Africa after a long absence. It is also the last AFCON to be held in an odd-numbered year. Given these multiple special meanings, a postponement would have severely damaged the brand of the Africa Cup of Nations.
In addition, starting from 2028, the Africa Cup of Nations will switch to a quadrennial format. As the conclusion of the old cycle, any delay would disrupt the global football calendar.
In our view, CAF’s decision to hold the tournament as scheduled is a correct yet challenging choice. It demonstrates the determination to advance African football, but also requires the full commitment of the three host nations to ensure a successful event and achieve a genuine win-win outcome.
