[Saba Sports News] According to British media reports, a 27-year-old man has become the first person in the UK to be charged with the offence of “ticket trespassing” after entering the League Cup final without a ticket. This incident occurred in the aftermath of the League Cup final. The new legislation came into effect last Sunday, just hours before Manchester City beat Arsenal 2-0 to win the League Cup final. The Metropolitan Police Service stated that Benjamin Bailey, a 27-year-old man from Fifth Avenue, Oldham, Manchester, is due to appear at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on 1st May in connection with the alleged offence. Two other men were arrested on suspicion of the same offence at Wembley Stadium and remain in custody. Those convicted of ticket trespassing could face a football banning order of up to five years, as well as a fine of up to 1,000 British pounds. Also on Sunday, during the match between Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a man was arrested on suspicion of ticket trespassing. He has been released on bail pending further investigation.
The editor believes that this legislation was introduced in response to the serious riots that broke out during the Euro 2020 final between England and Italy in July 2021, when thousands of fans forced their way into Wembley Stadium. The new bill is designed to crack down on the practice of fans without tickets following ticket-holders through the turnstiles to gain entry to the stadium.
