The app uses AI to identify authenticity by analyzing dozens of details including team crests, collars and care labels of jerseys. Test results show that only 50.7 percent of the Three Lions jerseys are genuine, while 25 to 35 percent of replica jerseys are confirmed fakes. Among Premier League club jerseys, Manchester United tops the list for counterfeits, with 38.4 percent of its tested jerseys identified as knockoffs. Alexey Protsenko, co-founder of the app, stated: “Counterfeit jerseys are getting better in quality and more widespread, and most fans have no idea how difficult they are to tell apart. Nearly four in ten jerseys checked via our app are fake, which shows how easily people get deceived.”
The editor believes that the prices of authentic football jerseys keep rising. An adult jersey costs around 80 British pounds, and adding printed names and numbers easily pushes the price over 100 pounds, while player-version jerseys range from 120 to 150 pounds. In contrast, counterfeit ones are sold at roughly 20 pounds. It is reported that Britain’s counterfeit goods industry is worth 9 billion pounds annually.
