[Saba Sports News] Miami Heat legend Alonzo Mourning revealed on Monday that he was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 prostate cancer. Fortunately, the cancer had not spread beyond his prostate capsule, and successful surgery in mid-March has left him cancer-free.
Mourning, 54, shared with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that he is now dedicated to advocating for routine prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests for middle-aged men to detect prostate cancer early. He emphasized the importance of testing, noting that many men, including himself, feel healthy but may unknowingly have cancer.
Inspired by a conversation three years ago, Mourning began regular visits to a urologist due to a family history of prostate cancer. Elevated PSA scores indicated potential cancer, leading to his diagnosis in February, despite being symptom-free and in top physical condition.
Mourning, a seven-time NBA All-Star and two-time Defensive Player of the Year, won a championship with the Heat in 2006 and has been Miami’s vice president of player programs and development since 2009. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014.
