[Saba Sports News] Following the Canadian Grand Prix, Mercedes maintained its dominant run through the 2026 campaign, yet team principal Toto Wolff shifted his focus to a separate issue: drivers’ emotional control over team radio. Having secured all five race wins across the opening five rounds of the season, Mercedes is locked in an intense intra-team title fight between Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.
The pair went head-to-head once again during the Canadian sprint race. As Antonelli attempted an outside overtake on Russell, he was forced off the racing line. The young Italian immediately vented his frustration over radio, arguing his teammate deserved a race penalty. When his race engineer urged him to refocus on driving, the rising star replied angrily: “I don’t care. He pushed me off the track.” Antonelli’s persistent complaints prompted direct intervention from Wolff, who cut in over team radio: “Stay focused on driving and stop moaning on the radio.”
Despite the on-track friction, Wolff does not believe their rivalry is damaging the squad’s overall interests. In his opinion, both Antonelli and Russell have displayed the hunger and aggression expected of genuine championship contenders. Even so, Wolff conceded there remains room for improvement regarding how the pair communicate via radio.
In my opinion, this incident boils down to a top-performing team setting boundaries for healthy internal competition: tough battle on track is encouraged, while disruptive infighting is forbidden; raw emotion is acceptable, but public grievances over radio cross the line. Mercedes may roll out formal internal competition guidelines should similar spats recur down the line, though for now the team sticks to free wheel-to-wheel racing and post-event debriefs.
