[Saba Sports News] Despite his eye-catching start to the season, Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s title prospects remain in doubt. Former F1 driver David Coulthard stated bluntly that for the Mercedes rising star to truly join the championship fight, he must first get the better of his teammate George Russell within the team.
Since the start of the new campaign, Mercedes has been in dominant form, sweeping victories across the opening three rounds and claiming the sprint race win at the Chinese Grand Prix. Even so, instability lingers inside the team. Antonelli suffered an error in the Australian Grand Prix practice session and incurred a penalty in the Chinese sprint, while Russell was plagued by qualifying mechanical issues and a lack of grip.
Against this backdrop, Antonelli seized his chances, securing back-to-back victories in China and Japan to edge ahead in the Drivers’ Championship standings by a narrow margin. Nevertheless, Coulthard argues such performances are not enough to prove Antonelli possesses the consistency required to contend for the title over a full season. He pointed out that with a competitive car at his disposal, Antonelli’s biggest challenge comes from his teammate. Boasting richer experience and greater steadiness, Russell is still the driver who better meets championship-calibre standards. Meanwhile, team principal Toto Wolff has sought to ease pressure on Antonelli, stressing that the young driver is still in a developmental phase. The team prioritises his long-term growth over short-term results.
In my opinion, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has been severely underrated and is fully capable of fighting for the world championship. Looking back at his displays in the latter part of last season, he outperformed Russell on multiple circuits and delivered strong race pace in high-stakes grands prix.
