[Saba Sports News] Before becoming one of the NBA’s brightest young stars, Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards had dreams of making highlight-reel plays on the football field.
A standout football player in his youth, it’s no surprise Edwards once envisioned life as a dual-sport athlete. While his meteoric rise in the NBA put that dream on hold, he’s now making his mark on the gridiron in a different way — through footwear.
This upcoming season, Edwards is teaming up with Adidas to launch his signature AE 1 sneaker as a football cleat. The trend of basketball kicks being adapted for football has grown rapidly, with players like Jalen Hurts regularly sporting Air Jordans on Sundays, and stars like Stefon Diggs and Tyreek Hill showing off custom cleats throughout the year.
Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison was actually the first to sport a custom pair of AE 1 cleats, paying tribute to fellow Minnesota standout Edwards. The basketball sneaker’s smooth transition to the turf impressed many, and now Adidas is planning a full public release.
After being crowned 2024’s hottest basketball shoe, the AE 1 is expanding across sports.
The upcoming football cleat will be based on the popular “Stormtrooper” colorway, featuring the same breathable mesh boot and molded TPU upper, now paired with Adidas Football cleat tech for on-field performance.
A neon green Adidas logo on the heel stays true to the sneaker’s original design, and the cleat’s TPU outsole ensures a seamless transition from hardwood to turf.
The Adidas AE 1 football cleats are expected to drop in June 2026. Pricing is still TBD, but they’ll be available through Adidas and select Adidas Football retailers nationwide.
