[Saba Sports News] China’s automotive giant BYD is seriously evaluating the possibility of entering Formula 1, news that has quickly sparked widespread attention across the F1 paddock. Li Ke, Vice President of BYD, confirmed that the company has held a meeting with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali in Shanghai and maintained ongoing communication regarding potential cooperation, with relevant discussions entering a substantive stage. When asked whether BYD’s entry into F1 is a realistic prospect, Li Ke replied without hesitation: “Yes, this is something we are currently exploring.”
Following the arrival of the Cadillac team ahead of the 2026 season, the number of F1 teams has risen to 11. Nevertheless, discussions over adding a 12th constructor have never ceased. According to Italian media reports, BYD is exploring multiple entry routes, including establishing a full works team independently, becoming a power unit supplier, or participating as a strategic partner.
In fact, Mohammed Ben Sulayem has repeatedly voiced his support for the inclusion of a Chinese team. He pointed out that F1 expansion is not a matter of quantity, but of value. Should a new entrant be able to boost the sport’s global influence and commercial scale, the F1 management will remain open-minded.
In my opinion, F1 expansion requires a careful balance of interests among existing teams. Amid adjustments to the revenue distribution model, the addition of a new team means a redistribution of commercial benefits, which explains the cautious stance held by several current constructors. Even so, it is undeniable that BYD’s potential entry will deliver positive value to Formula 1 in terms of sporting competition, commercial development and long-term growth.
