[Saba Sports News] The Cleveland Cavaliers continued their strong start to the 2024-25 season with a dominant 118-87 victory over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night.
Despite their elimination from NBA Cup contention after two group-stage losses, the Cavaliers remain at the top of the Eastern Conference standings, boasting a league-best record.
Tuesday’s Group C finale was not without its setbacks, however. Point guard Darius Garland suffered a head injury after catching an elbow from Wizards center Jonas Valanciunas while going up for a shot.
Garland was sidelined for the rest of the game, with the team announcing on social media that he is undergoing evaluation. Before exiting, Garland played just 17 minutes but made an impact with 12 points, three assists, and two 3-pointers.
The injury comes at an inopportune time for Garland, who missed significant time last season due to a fractured jaw that required surgery. That injury left lingering effects even after his return, and the Cavaliers will be hoping for a quicker recovery this time around.
Garland’s absence was compounded by a brief injury scare for star guard Donovan Mitchell, who has been an early MVP candidate and instrumental in the Cavaliers’ stellar start.
Mitchell returned to the game later, easing concerns, but the backcourt’s health remains a significant focus for Cleveland.
Garland has been a crucial piece of the Cavaliers’ success, averaging 20.8 points and 6.9 assists per game while shooting an impressive 45.2% from beyond the arc. His consistent scoring, especially on off nights for Mitchell, has helped propel Cleveland to their 19-3 record.
If Garland is forced to miss extended time, it would be a significant blow to one of the NBA’s hottest teams. His ability to create offense and orchestrate the Cavaliers’ attack has been vital to their early dominance, and his health will be a key factor in sustaining their momentum.
