[Saba Sports News] The Boston Celtics are promoting one of their top assistant coaches after their NBA championship win.
Marc Stein reported on his Substack page that the Celtics plan to elevate assistant coach Sam Cassell. This promotion keeps Cassell on head coach Joe Mazzulla’s staff, preventing him from leaving for a similar position elsewhere.
Cassell, 54, is a former All-Star point guard who played 15 NBA seasons, including a stint with the Celtics, winning a championship with them in 2008.
After retiring, Cassell transitioned to coaching and has 15 years of experience with four teams. He rejoined the Celtics for the 2023-24 season, culminating in the franchise’s record 18th NBA title.
Following their championship run, the Celtics lost several staff members, including lead assistant Charles Lee and senior consultant Jeff Van Gundy. Cassell had attracted interest from a major rival but is now set to remain in Boston, likely stepping into the lead assistant role vacated by Lee.
