[Saba Sports News] Chris Paul had a straightforward reason for choosing the San Antonio Spurs over more championship-ready teams.
After being released by the Golden State Warriors last month, Paul quickly signed a 1-year, $11 million deal with the Spurs.
During his introductory press conference on Tuesday, Paul explained his decision to join the Spurs, despite their low chances of contending next season.
The 19-year veteran emphasized the significant role he expects to play with the Spurs. He acknowledged that while staying closer to his Los Angeles home was appealing, his desire for a larger role took precedence.
“I love nothing more than the opportunity to play and contribute and hoop … I love basketball so much that I could be close to home, but if I’m not playing, I’m not happy,” Paul said. “My family knows me better than anybody and they know that I just want to play. I want to play more than anything.”
In his lone season with the Warriors, Paul came off the bench for the first time in his career, playing a career-low 26.4 minutes per game and averaging fewer than 10 points per contest.
With the Spurs, Paul will assume a critical role as the floor general alongside French phenom Victor Wembanyama.
