[Saba Sports News] Chris Paul has a new favorite lob target: Victor Wembanyama.
The 12-time All-Star plans to sign a one-year, $11 million deal with the San Antonio Spurs, according to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report.
The Warriors waived Paul on Sunday after failing to find a trade partner for his $30 million contract. The Spurs quickly seized the opportunity to acquire the 5-time assist leader.
Paul reportedly had a great conversation with Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, convincing him of the culture fit and the potential to “elevate” Wembanyama’s game.
The Spurs had been linked to several All-Star point guards but ultimately chose Paul, seeing it as a low-risk, high-reward move.
In 2019, Paul led a rebuilding Oklahoma City Thunder team to a surprising postseason appearance and mentored young star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Spurs hope Paul can have a similar impact on their young roster.
Last season, Paul averaged career lows in points (9.2), assists (6.8), and steals (1.2) per game across 58 games with the Warriors, primarily in a bench role.
