[Saba Sports News] Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka, who delivered a mediocre performance throughout the Asia Cup 2023, is likely to step down from the leadership role ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, which starts on the 5th of October in India.
This comes as an aftermath of Sri Lanka’s devastating loss to India in the Asia Cup 2023 final, held in Colombo, in which the hosts faced a 10-wicket defeat after setting a target of a mere 51 runs. India chased it down in just 6.1 overs.
The 32-year-old Shanaka failed to make any impact. His scores with the bat were 14*, 5, 24, 9, 2, 0. His best with the ball in the tournament came against Bangladesh when he recorded bowling figures of 9-0-28-3.
Moreover, according to reports, veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews is likely to be named in the squad for the upcoming World Cup.
The 36-year-old Mathews has played 221 ODIs for Sri Lanka, scoring 5865 runs in his career so far with an average of 41.02. He has also notched 40 half-centuries and three hundreds. In bowling, Mathews has picked up 120 wickets in 158 innings with an average of 33.35. He was last seen playing an ODI against Afghanistan in June 2023, although he didn’t get the chance to appear in the recently-concluded Asia Cup.
