[Saba Sports News] Following his remarkable century against India, Dean Elgar expressed that his aim was not to prove anything but to enjoy a day that was his own. He observed that the pitch, which lacked direct sunlight, surprisingly remained favorable for batting, defying expectations of it becoming more challenging. Elgar, focused on seizing run-scoring chances, expressed his intention to conclude his international career with impactful performances, prioritizing enjoyment over self-justification.
Elgar, known for his solid batting style, showcased an unusually aggressive approach on Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test against India. The experienced left-hander, who is nearing the end of his international career, scored an impressive unbeaten 140, including 23 boundaries, steering South Africa into a strong position in the Test.
“I don’t think I wanted to prove any point. I just wanted to go out with a bang, as that’s the standard I’ve set for myself, with no looking back. It was a good wicket to bat on, and without much sun, it was easier than expected,” Elgar commented, as reported by NDTV Sports.
Elgar emphasized a balanced approach between scoring and defensive play, noting the importance of being in a better position to make decisions and capitalize on scoring opportunities.
The former South African captain has announced his retirement after the two-match Test series against India. His illustrious 11-year international career will conclude post the India series. Elgar’s final appearances will be especially sentimental, with his penultimate match at his home ground in Centurion and his last at Newlands, a venue of personal significance where he scored his first Test runs.
Reflecting on his career, Elgar said, “Playing cricket was always a dream, but representing my country was the ultimate. Doing it for 12 years internationally has been beyond my wildest dreams. It’s been an incredible journey that I’ve been fortunate to experience.”
