Although both are top-tier badminton team championships, they differ significantly in several aspects. First, from the perspective of participants, the biggest difference between the Sudirman Cup and Thomas Cup lies in the gender restrictions. The Sudirman Cup is officially known as the Sudirman Cup World Mixed Badminton Team Championship, making it a mixed-gender badminton team event. This means that teams from various countries and regions must send male and female players to compete together, striving for this honor in the badminton world. On the other hand, the Thomas Cup is specifically for male badminton athletes, with only male players able to represent their respective nations or regions. Female athletes cannot participate. This gender restriction makes the Thomas Cup the peak of men’s badminton team events worldwide. Second, regarding the timing of the tournaments, there is a clear difference between the Sudirman Cup and the Thomas Cup. Since its founding in 1989, the Sudirman Cup has followed a biennial schedule, usually held in odd-numbered years. Meanwhile, the Thomas Cup takes place in even-numbered years, creating an alternating pattern with the Sudirman Cup.
