[Saba Sports News] NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo has passed away.
On Monday, the NBA announced that Mutombo died at the age of 58 following a battle with brain cancer. The Hall of Fame center disclosed in October 2022 that he had been undergoing treatment for a brain tumor.
At the time, he was described as being “in great spirits,” and a former teammate shared an encouraging update on his health shortly after.
Mutombo enjoyed a storied NBA career from 1991 to 2009. Drafted 4th overall by the Denver Nuggets out of Georgetown in 1991, he made an immediate impact, earning an All-Star selection as a rookie.
Throughout his career, Mutombo was named to eight All-Star teams and won Defensive Player of the Year four times. His most notable years came with the Nuggets and the Atlanta Hawks.
Standing 7-foot-2, Mutombo was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015. His iconic finger wag, a signature move after blocking shots, has been famously imitated by many NBA players over the years.
