[Saba Sports News] New reports indicate that the Dallas Mavericks may have managed to alienate the most iconic figure in franchise history.
Dirk Nowitzki, the legendary forward who spent his entire Hall of Fame career with the Mavericks, has recently distanced himself from the organization, according to multiple reports.
Jake Fischer of The Stein Line noted Sunday that although Nowitzki still maintains an office at the team’s facility, it reportedly goes largely unused.
One of the main points of contention is said to be the Mavericks’ treatment of longtime head trainer Casey Smith, with whom Nowitzki shared a close personal and professional relationship.
Smith was demoted ahead of the 2023 season and later left the franchise to join the New York Knicks. At the time, the move reportedly drew backlash from several within the organization, including Nowitzki.
ESPN’s Tim MacMahon echoed this sentiment during an appearance on The Hoop Collective, stating that Nowitzki is currently “completely turned off” by the direction of the franchise.
It doesn’t help that general manager Nico Harrison has made a series of polarizing moves—including the blockbuster trade involving Luka Doncic—and has defended his decisions by saying he must act in the best interest of the organization, even if that means alienating beloved figures like Nowitzki.
The resulting backlash has been so intense that even former owner Mark Cuban attempted damage control with fans, though with little success.
While Nowitzki was already expected to scale back his involvement due to an upcoming national broadcasting role, it appears the Mavericks have accelerated that separation. In the eyes of many, it’s just the latest misstep by a franchise that seems to be burning bridges across the board.
