[Saba Sports News] In an appearance on the ‘Club 520 Podcast,’ 4x NBA champion Draymond Green revealed that the Warriors had a trade lined up to add a win-now player. However, he advised against it to preserve the team’s future.
“[The Warriors] were about to make a trade last week and I told them straight up like that trade helps me,” said Green. “It’ll help me right now in my career but I’ve always spoken to y’all for what’s best for the organization and I won’t stop now. That’s a bad trade, don’t do that trade. I disagree with it, although it going to help me right now.”
The Warriors, who missed the 2024 playoffs, made several moves this summer, including acquiring Buddy Hield and Kyle Anderson. They had another trade in place, but Green’s advice led them to cancel it.
Green, a 12-year NBA veteran and 4x champion, has significant influence within the Warriors organization. His legacy with the team is strong, and his advice was enough to halt the trade talks.
Despite his drive to win, Green prioritizes the team’s long-term success. He believes that sacrificing future assets for immediate gains isn’t worth it, especially with the team in transition after Klay Thompson’s departure.
With Green, Steph Curry, and Andrew Wiggins, the Warriors hope to remain competitive in the West. However, Green sees the need to protect their future draft capital for the eventual rebuild after Curry. As Green’s contract expires in 2027, the Warriors must balance current competitiveness with future development to ensure sustained success.
