[Saba Sports News] According to British media reports, the EFL Cup semi-final will be the first to try broadcasting VAR decisions in-stadium, with the main referee announcing the final decisions reviewed by the VAR system on-site. This pilot program began in the match between Arsenal and Newcastle United, where referees will announce detailed decisions to the audience after consulting VAR. John Brooks and Michael Salisbury will serve as the main referee and VAR for this match, respectively, while Stuart Attwell and Paul Tierney will officiate the following day’s match between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. This innovation stems from successful practices in the 2023 Women’s World Cup and has already been implemented in the A-League and Primeira Liga. However, according to FIFA regulations, real-time communication between referees and VAR will remain confidential. In the past, the operation of VAR often left fans feeling mystified, with many questioning how referees made decisions. By allowing referees to communicate VAR decisions directly to the crowd, it will not only help viewers better understand the reasons behind the calls but also enhance the overall atmosphere of the match.
