Just twelve hours after England’s miserable World Cup
campaign came to an end with a 93-run victory over Pakistan, they announced new
ODI and T20I squads for a December Caribbean tour. The bilateral tour itinerary
doesn’t include any wait times.
Jos Buttler has been kept in charge of both white-ball
formats as captain. Only six members of the World Cup team will play in the
three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against the West Indies from December 3–9.
He is one of them. Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Curran, and
Liam Livingstone are the other five.
The ODI team includes a number of new players,
including a core group of players who were part of the reserve team that played
Ireland in late September. Ollie Pope, Josh Tongue, and John Turner are the
three players who do not have an ODI cap. Recovering from a shoulder injury,
Pope is favoured above Sam Hain, who was unexpectedly left off the roster
following a brilliant debut against Ireland.
As part of their preparation for the T20 World Cup in
June in the United States and the Caribbean, England will also play five
Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) on the tour, which runs from December 12–21.
The oldest player in their ODI World Cup team, Moeen Ali, has kept his place in
the T20I squad, but England has, for the time being at least, moved on from
Dawid Malan in that format.
This week, in advance of their last group match in
Kolkata, England’s managing director and selector, Rob Key, travelled back to
India with Luke Wright. Before the Pakistan match, they selected the squads for
this tour in consultation with Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott, who has
also been tipped to turn around England’s fortunes.
