[Saba Sports News] Anthony Edwards may be just 23, but Wednesday showed he’s still got work to do before reaching the NBA’s elite tier.
The Minnesota Timberwolves saw their season end in brutal fashion, getting blown out 124-94 by the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals.
At one point, Minnesota trailed by as many as 39 points in what turned into a lopsided series finale at Paycom Center.
Edwards, a three-time All-Star, struggled once again. He finished with a quiet 19 points on 7-of-18 shooting, following up his underwhelming 16-point effort in Game 4.
As the game got away from the Timberwolves early, fans on X were largely in agreement: Edwards simply isn’t on the same level as Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Gilgeous-Alexander, fresh off winning 2024-25 NBA MVP honors, was dominant throughout the series, scoring 30+ points in four of the five games. At 26, SGA showed more polish and control, excelling in efficiency, shot creation, and getting to the line — areas where Edwards still lags behind.
That said, Edwards has earned plenty of praise for his rapid rise and for leading Minnesota to consecutive trips to the Western Conference Finals — this time as a No. 6 seed.
But with both runs ending in five-game exits, it’s clear Edwards isn’t quite ready to carry the “face of the league” torch just yet, despite what the hype may say.
