[Saba Sports News] Recent reports suggest that the era of wind tunnel
testing in Formula 1 (F1) may come to an end by 2030. It is stated that 2030 is
the deadline set by the FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) for F1
to achieve carbon neutrality, meaning zero carbon emissions. The current wind
tunnel experiments conducted by teams have raised concerns about excessive
energy consumption. It is estimated that an 8-hour wind tunnel test consumes
approximately 10,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity. Moreover, building and
maintaining a wind tunnel is a time-consuming, labor-intensive, and costly
process. The total life cycle cost of a wind tunnel can reach close to $200
million. As an example, the McLaren team invested $20 million in constructing a
new wind tunnel in 2020, which is expected to be operational by 2024. Although
the FIA’s budget cap rules limit the annual usage of wind tunnels by teams,
there are no restrictions on teams’ investments in infrastructure.
Consequently, teams are investing significant resources in wind tunnel
facilities, which contradicts the notion of promoting healthy and sustainable
development in Formula One racing.
