[Saba Sports News] The Phoenix Suns may face another blow to their depth.
Phoenix sports host John Gambadoro recently posted on X that he doesn’t expect veteran guard Eric Gordon to return to the Suns next season. Gordon has a $3.4 million player option he must decide on by June 29. Gambadoro believes Gordon will decline the option and enter free agency.
The 35-year-old Gordon, a former Sixth Man of the Year and 20-point-per-game scorer at his peak, averaged 11.0 points per game on 37.8 percent shooting from three off the bench for the Suns last season. He also filled in as a starter during Bradley Beal’s injury.
Losing Gordon would hurt the Suns, who are a second-apron luxury tax team, limiting their ability to replace him. They wouldn’t have access to the taxpayer’s mid-level exception and couldn’t take on more salary in trades. Their options would be mostly minimum-salary veterans and draft picks.
On a positive note, the Suns recently extended Grayson Allen’s contract. Allen, seven years younger than Gordon, shot an NBA-leading 46.1 percent from three this season. Additionally, there seems to be an intriguing guard prospect for the Suns in this year’s draft.
