[Saba Sports News] India’s Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has confidently announced that Formula 1 will return to India in 2027, with the first race to be held at the Buddh International Circuit. Mandaviya believes the tax and bureaucratic issues that led to the cancellation of the Grand Prix after 2013 can be resolved, though he says it will take another six months to finalize the details. He added that the Indian government will help secure tax incentives to ensure the event can go ahead smoothly. At present, the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India and Formula 1’s governing body are in discussions over the matter.Despite these claims, Formula 1 officials have denied the possibility of a return to India in 2027.In a statement to RacingNews365, an F1 spokesperson clarified the position:“While India has a large and passionate fanbase and represents a valuable market for the continued growth of F1, there is limited space on the calendar, and we will not be staging a race in India in 2027.” India’s Formula 1 history has been fraught with difficulties. The Buddh International Circuit hosted races from 2011 to 2013, but was eventually removed from the calendar due to financial issues including tax disputes.
In my opinion, F1’s denial is a rational decision based on practical constraints and past lessons, rather than a rejection of India’s market value. If India wishes to return to the F1 calendar in the future, it must systematically resolve tax, legal and operational issues, rather than relying solely on political statements from senior officials.
