[Saba Sports News] A new report has reignited speculation about LeBron James’ future with the Los Angeles Lakers, suggesting his return to the team may not be as certain as once thought.
During a YouTube livestream on Wednesday, Jovan Buha of The Athletic hinted at underlying tension between James and the Lakers’ front office. While Buha ultimately believes James will remain in L.A., he acknowledged there’s still a real — albeit unlikely — possibility that the superstar could opt out of his contract and explore free agency.
“There’s always a chance that LeBron can walk,” Buha said. “As we’ve reported at The Athletic multiple times — myself and Sam Amick — the relationship has been a bit frosty at times. It hasn’t always been smooth over the past couple of years.
“I do think LeBron will be a Laker next year. The bigger question is whether he opts in to his current deal or opts out and re-signs on a new one.”
James has yet to publicly address his plans since the Lakers’ season ended, leaving his status up in the air and fueling speculation. While retirement doesn’t appear to be on the table, the lack of clarity has opened the door for continued rumors.
Most insiders expect James to opt in, but unlike last offseason, he’s unlikely to accept a discount. Meanwhile, the Lakers have reaffirmed their faith in GM Rob Pelinka and made a blockbuster move to bring in Luka Dončić as the franchise’s next cornerstone.
The team seems built to contend — a priority for James — but murmurs of unease between his camp and the front office are still lingering and worth watching as the offseason unfolds.
