[Saba Sports News] As F1 prepares for a brand-new set of technical regulations in the 2026 season, discussions surrounding the championship title have already heated up. According to the latest odds from betting companies, George Russell has emerged as the top contender for the new season’s Drivers’ Championship.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is not surprised by this; he stated that Russell has proven himself to be the outstanding driver in the paddock with his consistent and stable performances. Over the past few seasons, regardless of the car’s condition, Russell has consistently maximized the vehicle’s potential, which is particularly evident within Mercedes. Therefore, it is a reasonable assessment to view him as a major contender for the 2026 championship.
However, Wolff also emphasized that the driver and the car are always an inseparable whole. He admitted that the Mercedes team has yet to truly prove that their next-generation car possesses championship-winning potential. Especially under conditions of high temperatures and high-wear tracks, the team still lacks sufficient data to confirm their overall competitiveness. Regarding the odds and public opinion, he prefers to view them as an expression of hope rather than a predetermined outcome.
