[Saba Sports News] The title race of the 2026 Formula 1 season is quietly shifting. George Russell, originally seen as the leading favorite, has encountered setbacks over two consecutive race weekends, surrendering his championship lead to teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli. As the season progresses, internal competition within Mercedes has intensified, adding greater uncertainty to the title outcome.
At the start of the season, Russell was widely expected to control the championship pace thanks to his experience and the overall competitiveness of the car. However, he suffered a series of unexpected issues in back-to-back races in China and Japan, severely disrupting his rhythm. In contrast, Antonelli has been in outstanding form, securing consecutive victories to overtake his teammate and top the drivers’ standings.
After the Japanese Grand Prix, Russell admitted that everything seemed to go wrong for him lately. He explained that during the safety car restart, the car’s battery failed to charge properly, allowing Lewis Hamilton to overtake him on the straight. Battery problems resurfaced again during his battle with Charles Leclerc, worsening his position and costing him a podium finish. Beyond power unit issues, his race was also hampered by bad luck. The timing of the safety car worked heavily against Russell: the safety car was deployed just one lap after he pitted, while Antonelli benefited from a far more favorable pit window.
In our view, Russell has indeed endured a double blow of misfortune and technical problems early in the 2026 season, yet his professional attitude and the strength of his team still keep him in title contention. In a sport as dependent on engineering and timing as F1, such fluctuations are common over a long season. The key will be whether he can regain his rhythm and bounce back in the upcoming races.
