[Saba Sports News] Against the backdrop of links between Mercedes and Max Verstappen, George Russell has spoken publicly about the details of his contract, stating he is confident of easily triggering the performance clauses and securing his race seat for the 2027 season.
Last year, Russell signed a new contract with Mercedes, understood to be structured on a 1+1 basis, with the second year dependent on results. With Mercedes enjoying a strong start to the new season with successive wins and emerging as the frontrunner in the paddock, the difficulty for Russell to meet his contractual targets has decreased significantly. On this, he stated plainly: “I will be here again next year.” Just a year ago, Russell’s position was far from secure. Contract renewal talks were delayed at one point, and Verstappen was repeatedly linked with a move to Mercedes. However, the situation has now reversed. Red Bull’s competitiveness has declined, while Mercedes have been performing strongly, putting Verstappen’s future back in the spotlight.
Sources claim the four-time F1 world champion’s contract includes an exit clause that would allow him to leave if he fails to finish in the top two of the championship by the mid-season break. In this context, Mercedes’ driver lineup is regarded as the most likely to see changes.
In my view, on-track performance is what truly counts. As long as Russell maintains his current form, he will become more attractive than Verstappen. Rumours of Verstappen’s potential move are mostly market hype rather than a realistic threat.
