[Saba Sports News] Following the conclusion of the Canadian Grand Prix, George Russell not only lost crucial championship points but also received a penalty from the FIA for losing his temper after the race. The Mercedes driver was fined 5,000 euros for throwing his car’s headrest onto the track after retiring from the event. The fine, however, has been suspended for 12 months.
The incident unfolded mid-race, when Russell engaged in a fierce wheel-to-wheel battle with his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, with the pair swapping positions repeatedly. Between Turns 3 and 4, Russell ran off onto the grass, which led to a major technical issue with his car. He was forced to pull over shortly afterwards and retire early from the grand prix.
Clearly overcome by frustration as he stepped out of the car, Russell tossed the headrest onto the track. The action immediately drew the FIA’s attention and was put under investigation by the race stewards. According to documents released by the FIA, Russell admitted his conduct was inappropriate during the hearing and apologised to the stewards. He explained that he was extremely upset over the retirement and regretted his behaviour afterwards. The FIA accepted his explanation and issued a suspended penalty in the end.
In my opinion, the FIA’s ruling is professional and well-balanced. It upholds safety rules while giving the driver a chance to improve. Russell acted responsibly after the incident, yet he still needs to better manage his emotions under pressure. Especially at a time when Mercedes is fighting for the championship, such outbursts could hurt team morale and the squad’s points campaign.
