[Saba Sports News] Malaysian badminton legend Goh Liu Ying recently gave an interview in which she discussed the proposal made by national team head coach Rexy Ronald Mainaky to reduce the frequency of competitions for national team players. Goh expressed her support for this idea. She believes that players ranked highly in the world should prioritize high-value tournaments such as Super 750/1000 events and proactively forgo some Super 500 and lower-tier events to avoid a fatigue cycle of “competing for the sake of competing.”She argues that reducing participation in low-value events can help concentrate resources on winning medals in major competitions and extend the career lifespan of core players, preventing a talent gap.I believe that the current dense tournament system in badminton requires national team players to juggle multiple events, and excessive participation has become a common concern for many top players. Frequent withdrawals support the validity of Goh’s viewpoint.Additionally, the Badminton World Federation needs to optimize the rules by establishing health protection clauses, associations should create a scientific tournament assessment system, and players must enhance their awareness of independent planning, avoiding the misconception that more participation equates to more growth.
