[Saba Sports News] The Hainan Free Trade Port has announced the launch of a plan to introduce a Formula 1 project, sparking heated discussions among motorsport fans. On April 8, the Hainan International Cultural Exchange Center signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Dingji Automotive Culture (Hainan) Co., Ltd. The two parties will collaborate on introducing F1 events, constructing a Grade 1 circuit, commercial operation, and developing a cultural and tourism complex.
The project plans to build an internationally standard racetrack, a racing training academy, an automobile modification factory, a five-star hotel, and a comprehensive medical center. It aims to create an automotive culture industrial complex integrating racing experiences and high-end consumption, supporting the development of an international industrial ecosystem in the Hainan Free Trade Port.
However, some fans have expressed pessimism, noting that building an F1 track costs more than $360 million, and combined with the huge hosting fees, would create enormous financial pressure. Meanwhile, Hainan enforces strict ecological regulations; track site selection must balance environmental protection requirements and land planning restrictions, making it difficult for the plan to materialize in the short term.
In our opinion, a new circuit must pass strict certification by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). Furthermore, the global F1 calendar is already saturated, and adding a new Grand Prix requires long-term negotiations with Formula One Management (FOM). Hainan’s bid to host F1 may face practical challenges such as funding shortfalls and international scheduling issues.
