Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka could miss the entire
World Cup and even require surgery after aggravating his Grade 3 hamstring
rupture during the past several days.
Dushmantha Chameera, a fast bowler, and Maheesh
Theekshana, a spinner, are both still recovering from injuries. But there is
more optimism that those two will contribute in some way to the World Cup.
Arjuna de Silva, the chair of the SLC medical
committee, stated that “medically it seems unlikely that Wanindu will be
fit” for the majority of the World Cup.
Of course, the selectors could still choose him in the
hopes that he will still be available at the end of the round robin stage. But
according to medical advice, making such a move would be extremely risky.
In order to increase his workload, Chameera, who is
recovering from a pectoral ailment, is bowling in the nets. However, Theekshana
is currently in rehab after injuring his hamstring in the Asia Cup encounter
against Pakistan.
Quicks Dilshan Madushanka and Lahiru Kumara, who
missed the Asia Cup through injury, are now essentially back to full fitness,
de Silva said.
