[Saba Sports News] Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir praised MS Dhoni, acknowledging his team-first approach.
In a Star Sports show, Gambhir opined that MS Dhoni couldn’t achieve as much as he could as a batter because of his selfless behaviour. He reckoned that if Dhoni had not been the captain of the India, he could have broken numerous record while batting at number three.
“Because of captaincy, he couldn’t achieve what he could have achieved as a batter. A lot of times as captain you have to keep team first. If MS was not captain, he could have batted at No 3. I am sure he could have broken several ODI records. He has won a lot of trophies, but individually he sacrificed his international runs for trophies,” said Gambhir on Star Sports.
Furthermore, he also confessed that Indian cricket was blessed to have someone like Dhoni, who was equally good wicket-keeper and batter.
“Earlier, they were keepers first and batters later, but MS was batter first and then was a wicketkeeper. It was a blessing for Indian cricket that in MS Dhoni, we got a wicketkeeper-batter who can win you matches from No 7, because he had that power game,” he concluded.
For the unversed, Gambhir and Dhoni are often seen as rivals because of the former’s controversial statements on ex-India captain.
