In ODI rankings, India has surpassed Pakistan to take
the top spot ahead of the home World Cup. They previously held the top spot in
Tests and T20Is, and as a result, they currently hold that position in all
formats. After South Africa in August 2012, India is only the second team in
men’s cricket history to accomplish this feat.
After beating Australia on Friday, India has 116
rating points, one more than Pakistan. If Australia wins the final two games of
the series, they could still drop down the rankings.
India, Pakistan, and Australia were all vying for the
top slot throughout this month. Despite having a bad competition, Pakistan won
it at the end of the Asia Cup. After Australia lost three straight ODIs to
South Africa, their challenge was over. After handing Sri Lanka a humiliating
setback in the Asia Cup final, India went on to win their eighth championship
and followed that up by easily defeating Pat Cummins’ team. Four of their top
six batsmen scored half-centuries, while Mohammed Shami secured a career-high
five-for.
Additionally, India has four players holding the No. 1
spots in all major formats: Suryakumar Yadav is the No. 1 batter in T20Is,
Mohammed Siraj is the No. 1 bowler in ODIs while R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja
are at the top of the bowling and allrounder charts in Tests
India will take on Australia in two more one-day
international matches in Rajkot and Indore, respectively. Before beginning
their World Cup campaign against Australia on October 8 in Chennai, they will
also play two exhibition games.
