[Saba Sports News] It’s been a summer of milestones for Celtics star Jayson Tatum, who’s still processing the whirlwind of the past few months. From the NBA Finals to endorsement deals and the 2024 Olympic Games, Tatum is fully aware of how surreal the experience has been.
“It’s been a crazy summer,” Tatum told St. Louis Today. “I was fortunate enough to win my second Olympic gold medal with the national team. That was an incredible experience. And finally winning an NBA championship, something I’ve worked towards for so long, was truly special—it felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders.”
For years, Tatum, now 26, faced criticism for his inability to close out in high-pressure situations, leading to doubts about the Celtics’ potential. However, this summer, Tatum and the Celtics answered those doubts by convincingly winning the NBA Finals. Though Jaylen Brown took home the Finals MVP, Tatum played a crucial role, averaging 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game on 47.1% shooting.
Fresh off his first championship, Tatum was named the cover athlete for NBA 2K25, solidifying his status among the game’s elite players. He then capped off the summer with a gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games, contributing to Team USA’s victory despite some controversy over his role in the rotation.
All in all, it’s been a historic summer for Tatum, one that could mark a turning point in his career. After years of striving to prove himself and solidify his legacy with the Celtics, winning both an NBA championship and an Olympic gold in the same summer must have been a powerful validation.
Now, the focus shifts to defending the championship. The Celtics, with Tatum, Brown, Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porzingis, are well-positioned to make another title run. The pressure will be on the stars, and after a dominant Finals performance, expectations for Brown are high. Tatum, too, may need to elevate his game further if the Celtics are to maintain their hold on the Eastern Conference. Fortunately, after a summer of proving himself on the biggest stages, Tatum seems ready for the challenge.
